      <image:title>Until You Grow - Until You Grow</image:title>
<image:caption>A site specific installation in collaboration with Kinuko Esther Asano. We compare and confront our perception of the figure of the mother and that of the child. We explore the child/mother bond as well as the thin line between protection and confinement. It is also an introspection and a meditation about our deepest biological fears: the growing mass can be either seen as a fetus or a tumor that is being kept captive or that is growing beyond the limits of its allowed space. Either way, it is something that grows inside of us, under the skin, and that we cannot control. Viewers are being challenged to interpret the piece based on their own experience of childhood and parenthood as they are looking at their own reflection. Mylar, plastic, polyfil, stocking and thread  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Marsyas</image:title>
<image:caption>MARSYAS ARDA ASENA - MIA DUDEK CURATED BY | NICK HACKWORTH APRIL 18-MAY 25 2019 Galerist presents Marsyas between the dates April 18 – May 25, 2019, an exhibition of work by two emerging artists – Mia Dudek and Arda Asena that responds to the eponymous Greek myth. The brief tale recounts the hubris and gruesome fate of Marsyas. A satyr and follower of Dionysius he lived in Phrygia, a kingdom that existed in what is now Anatolia. A gifted flute player, Marsyas rashly challenged Apollo, the god of music himself, to a contest to decide who was the better musician, with the agreement that the loser would submit to whatever punishment the victor chose. Only when he cheated, by adding his divine voice to the sound of his lyre, did Apollo win. In vengeance for daring to challenge a god, Apollo flayed Marsyas alive and nailed his skin to a nearby pine tree. The torrents of tears shed by the creatures, nymphs, gods and goddesses that mourned Marsyas, fell upon the earth, intermingled and became the source of the Meander river, now known as the Büyük Menderes River. This strange and violent story was a touchstone in Classical, particularly Roman, culture. For populists Marsyas became a symbol and mythic martyr for liberty, freedom of expression and the right to speak truth to power. To authoritarians his fate was a warning to the forces of chaos and misrule. This exhibition brings together in dialogue two powerful bodies of work, each created in response to the story of Marsyas. Mia Dudek’s latest series, Marsyas, Dudek plays with and juxtaposes various ways to picture, represent and manifest skin. The works are all about surface and surfaces. Unusually composed, close-up shots of bodies and body parts, render them almost alien and unfamiliar. The bodies seem restricted, covered in some with clear plastic in some images and strained, muscles and veins bulging in others. Dudek further complicates her depiction of skin with varying material productions of the works. In Dudek’s series Marsyas’ cruel punishment has become the default state, as if in our moment, all physicality is comprised. Arda Asena has especially created a series of sculptures and sculptural installations for this exhibition and in response to the myth and Dudek’s body of work. The works develop a line of sculptural enquiry in which Asena uses fabric-based sculptures to depict, in semi-abstract fashion, bodily forms. Some are formed of stuffed, flesh coloured stockings lying abjectly, in corners, draped over plinths or suspended from the ceiling – skinless bodies, their innards waiting to spill out. Others are formed by being stretched between walls, the fabric pulled into translucency by the physical tension, an abstract echo of the Marsyas’ flaying at the hands of a tyrannical god. An oblique but powerful sculptural achievement. Dudek and Asena’s work combine to conjure a disturbing sensibility of tortured physicality, echoing the pessimistic wisdom of the myth of Marsyas, that suffering is more common than justice.</image:caption>

It is meant to be viewed in a loop. In this piece, The Effervescence of the Sublime, I explore the unfathomable tension of the unconscious through water. Water as something uncontrollable, formless and as a force of nature. I’m interested in the resilience and resistance of the uncontrollable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“…the light space is the space of vision, while the second space, the dark space, is that of touch.Precisely because of this it [obscurity] does not spread out before me but touches me directly, envelops me, embraces me, even penetrates me, completely passes through me, so that one could almost say that while the ego is permeable by darkness it is not permeable by light. The ego does not affirm itself in relation to darkness but becomes confused with it…” - Eugene Minkowski</image:caption>

<image:caption>Provisional Greeting - 2019 Abyss is an ongoing series that currently includes 32 images. Abyss is a state of being. A bodily state. As well as a mental state. It is tactile yet invisible. It’s in me, with me wherever I go, whether in the presence or in the absence of a body. It’s a space of accessing and embodying the disobedient disembodiment. In this series I investigate life, death and sensibility of death. As well as the notion of what happens when internal intrudes the external. Or what happens when the external invades and exposes the internal. How do these dynamics function within their codependency?</image:caption>

<image:title>Interstitial - Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York Presents: Interstitial – An Exhibition by Arda Asena</image:title>
<image:caption>Photo Credit: Lloyd Mccullough Written by Gervias Marsh New York, NY – Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York is thrilled to announce Interstitial, a solo show by interdisciplinary artist Arda Asena. Working across photography, jacquard weaving, and sculpture, the exhibition will be on view at Baxter St’s main gallery located at 126 Baxter Street from January 8 - February 6, 2025. “Jacquard weaving has pushed me to question different temporalities collapsing within one medium,” Asena explains. “It becomes a site of projection, a way to meditate on what the body holds, and to bury what is overlooked, unspoken, or expected to remain silent.” Asena’s work transpires through an intricate visual and tactile language, complicating the materiality of the photograph, and attending to translations across mediums. Texture contains memories, unarticulated feelings and traces of experiences that have been submerged, yet seep through unexpectedly. In Interstitial, cross-disciplinary experimentation complicates material boundaries, underscoring multiplicity in both Asena’s approach to making and the varying modes of engagement visitors may experience through works. The tensions of physical and psychic violence etch into the body, burrowing through the psyche and settling into the recesses of the mind. It reconfigures ways of being, manifesting through forms that elude detection and fixed definition. Pain accumulates and we adjust to new realities; moving across expansive distances from former selves. Sometimes who you were is difficult to recognize. Quiet is not devoid of sound or action. It accompanies secretive strategies, modes of communication that circulate below the surface of perception. Interstitial affirms the nonverbal and intangible, where the depth of feeling resides. Asena proposes the framework of secretive eroticism, tactics that have long been employed for survival by queer people in the face of social and cultural violence. These secrets lean into abstraction, for the traumas of violence exceed representation, too slippery to grasp. Violence often precipitates mourning, inciting temporal disorientation that may never end but changes shape. The warp-and-weft structures of weaving continue to generate questions on structure, contemplating what different mediums hold in their layers. Certain elements become emphasized depending on the viewer’s approach, evoking a presence that may be more acutely felt, while other aspects of the work recede into a seeming absence. Asena’s work exists in space molded amidst anticipation and reality, attuned to the gaps. Interstitial forges an ecosystem of experience, individual and collective. Each visitor is invited to dwell in this interplay, negotiating the tension and release.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Interstitial - On Arda Asena's Interstitial</image:title>
<image:caption>Written by Aslı Zengin In the exhibition Interstitial, a concept derived from the Latin word interstitium, meaning "a space between, Arda Asena invites us to embrace thresholds, liminal zones, and connective tissues that often defy rigid categorization. Asena creates artistic experimentations with ecological spaces, bodies, and objects that exist in the in-between by inciting viewers to explore the delicate interplay between surface, skin, and intimacy—a dialogue that blurs the lines between the human body and the earth, the psyche and the external world. Asena’s cross-pollination of photography, sculpture, and textile reflects this in-betweenness across artistic disciplines. Their choice of mediums and creation of artwork generate questions about relating, moving, orienting, sensing, and becoming in ecological and embodied worlds, where boundaries dissolve and connections emerge unexpectedly. Through the interstitial sites of cracks, traces, transitions, and translations, Asena’s work breathes, uniting texture, memory, archive, and sensation. The exhibition draws threads between the skin and the earth. Textiles resembling human flesh are woven into installations that mimic landscapes, challenging viewers to consider the porousness of these seemingly distinct entities. Threads stitch together skin and the earth, binding what seems separate. A language emerges in the liminal space where touch and sight converge. What does it mean to weave vision into texture, to feel what we see? What does it mean for the body and the earth to merge, to mirror each other? The artist explores these questions through mediums that transcend their traditional boundaries. Photographs weave into textiles, creating a multisensory experience that translates sight into touch and vice versa. The works whisper of shared intimacy between human and non-human entities, reminding us that we are inextricably linked to the world around us. Negative visuals of rocky terrains, arid landscapes, and wild plants accompany close-ups of the human body and skin, creating an uncanny sense of continuity. The interplay of light, color, shadow, and needle scratches transforms these images into a tactile surface. By collapsing the boundaries between senses, Asena fosters a more intimate connection between the viewer and the work. Mediums collide, blend, and reconstitute themselves anew. Senses speak to one another. The interstitial also includes what is often overlooked or dismissed as residual. It can be a site of tension, conflict, precarity, and violence because lives and bodies in the in-between are often marginalized or erased for not neatly fitting into established frameworks. In Asena’s works, the earth’s crust and human skin emerge as repositories of histories, traumas, and transformations. The artist’s manipulation of texture—creating seemingly hard surfaces from soft materials—invites viewers to question their assumptions about strength and vulnerability. For example, lumps sticking out on the sculpture’s body resemble wounds, hinting at injuries and memories of violence that resurface. These lumps are not flaws; they are storytellers, embodying a record of what has been hidden or repressed but refuses to remain buried. What goes hidden, repressed, or buried can never remain still. Wounds rise, memories break free, and time etches its indelible marks on the skin of humans, on the skin of the earth, and on the shells of objects. The skin, no longer a barrier, becomes a threshold: porous, absorbing, exhaling. Interstitial becomes a space for uncovering what lies beneath. Ultimately, Asena tempts viewers to open themselves to a deeper understanding of the world and their place within it—a world that is not just defined by what lies within boundaries but also by the rich potential of the spaces between. The exhibition surrounds viewers in its rich incitements to ponder transformation, negotiation, and exploration. This way, Asena offers us a space where we can inhabit the in-between, and hence, complexity, fluidity, connection, and transformation.</image:caption>
